Energy Sec. Perry denounces alma mater’s election of first gay student body president in op-ed

The alma mater of former Texasgovernor and current Secretary of EnergyRick Perry has elected its first freely gay student body president, but Perry themself thinks the election was stolen like a diversity move.

Within an opinion piece published intheHouston Chronicle on Wednesday, Perry alleged the administrationat Texas A&M College unfairly disqualified the topvote-getter, Robert McIntosh, and handed the presidency to Bobby Brooks, who’s freely gay. Within the piece, Perry wrotehe first thought Brooks&#8217s election was proof of A&ampM&#8217s character, but felt differently once he learnedthe grounds which McIntosh was disqualified, according tothe Washington Post.

McIntosh was initially disqualified for allegations of voter violence and erroneous campaign expense reporting, Texas Tribune reported, but was later removed from the first charge. A&ampM&#8217s judicial court upheld that McIntosh unsuccessful to report finances for glow sticks featured inside a campaign video.

&#8220At worst, the SGA permitted an election to become stolen outright,&#8221 Perry authored. &#8220&#8230Brooks presidency has been treated like a victory for &#8216diversity.&#8217It is tough to flee the perception this pursuit of &#8216diversity&#8217 may be the real reason the election effects were overturned. Will the principle of &#8216diversity&#8217 override and supersede other values in our Aggie Recognition Code?

Perry also recommended which had Brooks been charged with similar allegations of McIntosh called the top election-getter, the A&ampM administration wouldn&#8217t have permitted him to become disqualified.

&#8220Every Aggie must ask themselves: Wouldso would they act and feel when the victim was different?&#8221 Perry authored. &#8220What if McIntosh was really a minority student rather of the white-colored male? Let’s say Brooks have been the candidate disqualified? Would the administration and also the student body have permitted the very first gay student body president to become voided for implementing charitable organization glow sticks? Would a student body have permitted a black student body president to become disqualified on anonymous charges of voter violence?&#8221

Amy Cruz, A&ampM&#8217s senior v . p . of promoting and communications, denied the allegations, and told the Tribune thatthe students run the elections, and not the managers. She also expressed surprise in the energy secretary&#8217s readiness to involve themself within the school&#8217s matters.

&#8220I would state that we professionally disagree together with his assessment&#8230and his knowledge of the election rules of student body president elections doesnt reflect the details,&#8221 Cruz stated. &#8220Honestly, i was just surprised to determine the secretary of one’s would take time to weigh in at length so we professionally disagree together with his assessment of the items happened.&#8221

Perry may be the first Texas governor to possess finished Texas A&ampM, and spent 14 years handling appointments towards the school&#8217s Board of Regents.McIntosh may be the boy of the prominent Republican fundraising event in Dallas who campaigned for President Donald Trump throughout the 2016 election, which could help explain why Perry made the decision to get involved with such alocalized event.

Based on the school&#8217s student newspaper the Battalion, Brooks didn&#8217t make his sexuality part of his campaign platform and didn&#8217t react to demands for comment. McIntosh, however, stated he appreciates Perry&#8217s support, and stillbelieveshe was wrongly disqualified.

&#8220I did by no means expect his editorial and that i&#8217m humbled to possess his support,&#8221 McIntosh told the Battalion. &#8220Our campaign team won the election and it was subsequently disqualified unfairly. Diversity, in internet marketing&#8217s heart, is equal management of all, so we hope this case is resolved in a manner that ensures a good and much more transparent process now as well as in future elections.&#8221
